Herniated Disc Q & A

What is a herniated disc?

Also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, a herniated disc occurs when the cushiony center of your vertebra pushes through its exterior and irritates a nerve. Herniated discs occur most often in the neck and lower back.

What causes a herniated disc?

Degeneration of your disc, which occurs as you get older, is the most common cause of a herniated disc. But you may be more at risk of developing the painful back condition if you have a family history of herniated discs, carry excess weight, or your occupation is physically demanding.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

Symptoms of a herniated disc vary depending on the location. Not everyone with a herniated disc develops symptoms and you may only discover you have a herniated disc accidentally during a spinal imaging test.

Common symptoms of a herniated disc include:

  • Intense pain in your buttocks, thigh, or calf
  • Intense shoulder or arm pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, Dr. Hennessy conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine if your discomfort stems from a herniated disc. In addition to a physical exam, he may recommend diagnostic imaging to confirm a diagnosis and determine the extent of the herniation. Nerve testing may also be recommended to assess nerve damage.

How is a herniated disc treated?

Dr. Hennessy is a highly skilled orthopedic spine surgeon, but more than likely he won’t recommend surgery when you come in for treatment for a herniated disc. He develops a personalized treatment plan that helps you get the most benefits with minimal intervention.

Treatment may include:

  • Medications to help you manage pain
  • Cortisone injections to reduce inflammation and irritation
  • Physical therapy to improve back and spine strength

Surgery is rarely recommended as a treatment for herniated discs. Dr. Hennessy may recommend surgery, however, if your symptoms don’t improve with conservative treatment or you’re experiencing loss of bowel or bladder control.

Dr. Hennessy may be able to remove only the portion of your disc that’s protruding. But if necessary, he can remove the entire disc and perform a spinal fusion for spine support. Dr. Hennessy is a skilled surgeon and uses minimally invasive techniques when appropriate, namely the XLIF® lateral lumbar interbody fusion for removal of your herniated disc with less risk to you.
